Bible Prophecy | Is 2012 Really the End of the World?
I am writing this post on a supposedly ominous date – December 21, 2009 exactly three years before the “doomsday” – December 21, 2012 – predicted by many as the day of the end of the world. The 2012 movie by Roland Emmerich also has added to the hype and fear of the general public. However, the 2012 business is booming because of the hype and desperate people are buying survival kits and water purifiers.
- So, is 2012 really the end of the world?
- Why is December 21, 2012 predicted to be the doomsday?
- What does Bible prophecy have to say about it?
- What should we be doing about it?
Those who are predicting the end of the world in 2012 do it for the following reasons:
- The Long Count Mayan Calendar ends on a winter solstice on December 21, 2012. The Mayans were sun worshippers and they believed that the current cycle (5th cycle) of 5125 years will end on this date. At this time the Sun will reach the centre of the galaxy and it will emit a powerful surge of light and reverse its polarity. This event would cause unprecedented cosmic catastrophe on earth.
- Solar storms on our sun have been exposing the earth to a lot of radiation. This activity is getting worse and scientists say it will reach its peak in 2012
- The earth’s magnetic field protects us from the sun’s radiation. Scientists predict that the earth is also going to swap its polarity, that is, the North Pole will be the South Pole and vice versa. The poles are already drifting apart about 20-30 kms each year much rapidly than ever before. When the polar shift happens, the magnetic field of the earth will be disrupted exposing us to the harmful UV radiation enough to kill everything. This event can happen along with the sun’s polarity reversal. This double shift may cause massive earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
There are a host of other reasons also. If you are interested to know about them you can find them at http://www.merinews.com/article/the-world-will-end-in-2012-say-experts/139440.shtml
But what does Bible prophecy say about the end of the world and 2012?
“And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” (Lk 21:25-28 – NKJV)
The Bible clearly says that there will be signs in the sun, moon, stars, earth, sea and the powers of heaven will be shaken. Men’s hearts will fail from fear. But these passages relate to the period at the end of the Great Tribulation because as it says again – the world will see Jesus coming with power and great glory.
Whether these signs will happen in 2012? Surely not, because they are prophesied to happen at the end of the Great Tribulation. So then, what is going to happen in 2012? The earth is already undergoing a worrying rise in natural and man-made calamities. We are already witnessing earthquakes, floods, eruption of volcanoes, war, threat of nuclear holocaust and epidemics. These are bound to increase in frequency and intensity.
All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Mt 24:8 – NKJV)
Doomsday Survival Kit
The Bible does not specify a time for the return of Jesus and the beginning of the Great Tribulation period. It only cautions us to watch out and be ready.
“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. (Mt 24:36 – NKJV)
Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. (Mt 24:44 – NKJV)
So, instead of relying on doomsday predictions and getting all excited, let better sense prevail. It makes much more sense to prepare ourselves for His coming rather than try and predict what Jesus said will happen at an hour “you do not expect”.
Even though the Bible does not specify the time, it gives us what we really need – “A Doomsday Survival Kit”. You can escape the doomsday. You don’t have to die when the world ends. The Bible says:
And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ (Acts 2:21 NKJV)
That’s all you need to escape the doomsday. Call on the name of the Lord Jesus and be saved. When the earth faces the great tribulation and the full measure of the wrath of God with the cosmic powers being shaken, you will be safe in Jesus’ arms because His church will already have been raptured by then.
Maranatha! Our Lord is coming soon.
