Earthquake in Haiti & Dominican Republic – A Grim Reminder
The New Year has descended with a tragedy on Haiti and the Dominican Republic. On January 12, 2010 Haiti was devastated by an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale which means it is a massive earthquake with severe destruction. The presidential palace and the UN headquarters also have been affected. Thousands of people are feared dead. Many more are homeless, stricken and in need of help. The country is in darkness with no electricity. Communication lines have snapped. There have been more than 30 aftershocks since.
Haiti is facing the worst earthquake in 200 years. Haiti has a painful history of violence, instability and dictatorship. It has a democratic government since 2006. The population is around 10 million. People face extreme poverty with 90% of people living on less than $2 a day. Haiti is the poorest country in the West and it simply doesn’t have the means to carry out a rescue operation of this magnitude. Consequently much depends on how quickly foreign aid arrives.
In 2008, tragedy visited Haiti in the form of storms and hurricanes. Even now, in the wake of this massive earthquake, the country has been put on tsunami alert.
“For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.” (Mat 24:7-8 – NKJV)
Sometime back I wrote an article regarding the Biblical signs of the end times – earthquakes with detailed statistics.
This tragic earthquake in Haiti and the Dominican Republic is a grim fulfillment of Bible prophecy. The suffering of people is untold. Let our hearts go out to them. Take a moment to pray for them. Watch Haiti earthquake video here as you pray for them.
No kingdom of this world is stable and free from trouble. There is only one kingdom which will be an everlasting one and that is the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. The troubles of this world are momentary. All our hope rests in Jesus.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Rom 15:13 – NIV)
Maranatha! Our Lord is coming soon.
