Reference Verse:
In Ruth 1:16-17, she says to her mother-in-law, Naomi:
“Entreat me not to leave you, or to turn back from following after you;
For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge;
Your people shall be my people, And your God shall be my God.
Where you die, I will die, And there will I be buried.
The Lord do so to me, and more also, If anything but death parts you and me.”(NKJV)
These verses show the exceptional commitment on the part of a young girl, Ruth, to her mother-in-law, Naomi, and God.
Context:
Ruth, a Moabitess, came from a society that were not allowed entry into God’s tabernacle upto the tenth generation. Moabites were descendants of Lot through an incestuous relationship with his daughter.
In such circumstances, to take a decision to forsake her people, her culture and to embrace a foreign culture, a foreign religion was really a brave one. She would have heard a lot about the Israelite culture and their God from her husband and definitely from Naomi. Her life in Moab with Naomi was somewhere around 10 years. And in these 10 years she knew something about the Israelite God which emboldened her to take this drastic decision.
However, Ruth did not know what she was getting into. There was no hope of financial security, re-marriage, nobody of her own people to fall back on. And yet she was determined.
Orpah, on the other hand, chose the security of her own culture and possibly re-marriage and a comfortable life. She was not too concerned about God.
God rewarded Ruth’s decision handsomely. The Bible says, God is not a respecter of persons – He does not show partiality. He honored Ruth for her decision to serve Him, come what may. All her material, physical, emotional and spiritual needs were satisfied. She got food on the table, she got a job, she got a husband and a family, and she was respected.
Lesson:
Ruth got all her needs met and not just that, she was blessed to be in the geneology of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. She became the great-grandmother of King David, through whose lineage, Jesus was born. She was blessed in that through her lineage, mankind received salvation, peace, hope and joy. She brought God’s blessing to the world. She was blessed and she became a blessing.
Friends, if you choose for God unconditionally, no matter what your circumstances, He will most surely take care of your immediate needs. But much greater than that, Jesus will choose to reveal Himself through your life and that, my friends, will have eternal fruit.
There is nothing more blessed. You shall be blessed and you shall be a blessing to others. Jesus will bring salvation, peace, hope and joy to the world through you. God bless you.
